Kindergarten, first and second graders have been learning about Digital Citizenship in Media. We are learning from the Digital Citizens (Common Sense Media) ways to be safe, responsible, and kind online. Today, first graders in Ms. Bosio's class talked about the big feelings we have when using technology and what to do if something online makes us feel uncomfortable. Then we headed to the makerspace to make emoji puppets that represent some of our feelings about technology.

The third graders are hard at work on building habitats for the visiting animals. We will be visited by a sloth, an African penguin, a jellyfish, an octopus, a snowy owl and an arctic fox! I know the animals will just love the habitats, food, and toys the 3rd grade zoo keepers are making for them. We learned about being "eco friendly" and one way we are doing that with this project is using all materials that we already had in our maker space! The students have enjoyed incorporating reusable materials such as plastic containers, egg cartons, cardboard boxes, and fabric in fun, new ways.
The fifth graders have worked so hard on their career podcasts and they are finally edited and uploaded. Students will have time to listen to their classmates' podcasts and reflect on the process in their learning portfolios. I am so proud of how hard the students worked and blown away by how professional some of these podcasts sound! This activity was a great learning experience about our digital footprint and the many forms of digital media that can be harnessed for sharing information. This wasn't just a learning experience for the students, as I learned a lot about podcasting (and troubleshooting) along the way, too.
In a recent grad class, I learned about sketch notes - a fun way of incorporating drawing and other visual elements to traditional note-taking. The third graders are enjoying making sketch notes while researching animals on MeL in Britannica, World Book Kids, and Explora. I've never seen a group of third graders so excited to take notes before! I think what we love most about our sketch notes is that they remind us of graphic novels.
The first and second grade guess-and-flip books are going up in the hallway, and the third graders are already excited to try and guess the famous person from the three clues.
First and second graders are learning how to access PebbleGo through Troy Public Library. They use their TPL eCard number (212739 followed by your student number) to log in to PebbleGo and access all five modules. We're using the Biography module to research someone famous and make a mystery guess-and-flip book about them.
In February, K-2 students study Biographies. This is a great opportunity to learn about famous African Americans. We kick this unit off by learning about the Coretta Scott King Medal, since we just learned about the Caldecott Medal in January. First and second graders will go on to read more biographies on their iPads in PebbleGo. Here are some of the books we have read or will be reading this month:
