I recently gave some of my 2nd grade classes an incredibly difficult task - to try and select their favorite picture book of 2016 and form a "mock Caldecott committee" to pick a winner. Students worked in groups of four and tried to come to a consensus about which book had the strongest, most interesting and engaging illustrations. Get 4 second graders to agree on which one is "the best"? Not easy! But they worked hard to convince their table-mates and most groups were able to at least get a majority (3) to agree on the same book. Now imagine getting 15 adult librarians to agree - yikes! I do not envy that Caldecott committee, they have a tough tough job this year. There are so many beautiful books from which to choose.
Here are some of my favorites of 2016. I wouldn't mind placing one of my shiny medal stickers on any of these lovely covers!
